Storytime 25 May 2025: The Neverending Story Part 13
We’re continuing with Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story. Bastian has chased after the retreating Falkor and Atreyu, leaving everyone else behind, but in the process he’s learned that Atreyu was right to worry about his dwindling memories – every human who has come to Fantastica and attempted to declare themselves Emperor has run out of wishes, which is equivalent to running out of memories of the human world, ending up a lost, helpless shell of a person unable to even speak, let alone tell a story. All alone now, Bastian has once again resolved to try to return home, but considering that it requires wishes to travel through Fantastica, does he have enough left? He’s unconsciously wished to be part of a community, finding himself in a town where there are no individuals, but although this has gotten him across the Sea of Mist, he’s learned that there isn’t really any love in this way of life, and he’s still not sure how to get home. Getting close to the end – we should finish it next time.
