CAPCon X

I’m at the 10th annual CAPCon (Chicago Age Players Convention)! I recall first attending CAPCon in 2012, meaning that this is my 9th time, and I’ve been to every CAPCon but the first one. Unless I remember wrong, that is.

At my first CAPCon, the con space was in the hotel’s ballroom areas, but there was access to them through a hallway that didn’t have a door — so the con organizers made a door! It was awesome. They built a section of wall with an actual door frame and door in it, and they placed this in front of the hallway. The con wasn’t big enough to take over the hotel, so we had to dress vanilla in the public areas and carry our little clothes in bags to the con space, where we had to change.

At my second CAPCon, the con space was the top floor of the hotel, which was where the conference rooms were, and there was only one elevator that went up there. We still had to change after getting to the con space, and changing areas were very limited. Plan ahead! The con was only at that hotel for one year.

The third CAPCon I went to through last year’s were all at the same hotel, which had an attached convention center — but for the first several years, the con didn’t use it. It wasn’t big enough. There still weren’t enough people to take over the hotel, so we still had to dress vanilla in public areas, carry our stuff to the con space, and change once there. At least there were more elevators!

But then, two years ago, things changed. Not only were there enough people to use the convention center; there were enough to take over the hotel. With no guests other than CAPCon guests, it was now possible to dress in little gear anywhere in the hotel except for the restaurant and bar, which were still open to the public. CAPCon just kept growing. There was still one problem: the skywalk between the hotel and convention center. It wasn’t that high up, and it was all windows. The rule was no gear visible while crossing the skywalk. Fine, so put your bottles, pacifiers, collars, or whatever in your carry bag. That wasn’t so bad.

And now it seems to have outgrown that hotel, because it’s at a new one this year. Here we are! I’m doing storytime later this morning (sadly not live streamed), and I’ll be enjoying many great events.
