The AB/DL Code, version 1.0

After seeing GrBear and others use the Furry Code, the Geek Code, the Plushie Code, and so forth, I thought it might be a good idea for us to have an adult baby/diaper lover code, to make it easier to express our likes to each other at a glance.

For those who aren't familiar, this is an example of a "signature code." You go through the list of symbols and assemble a line or two of codes, which you then place in your signature (the four or so lines that everybody sticks at the bottom of their email messages and Usenet posts). People familiar with the code can then look and see what you're into, then email you and say, "Hey, I like X too!"

This is version 1.0 of the AB/DL Code. That means that it has gone through a few revisions but is now in the proper shape for a final "release," although more revisions may (and probably will) happen in the future. These codes are often given version numbers so everybody knows which edition of the code is being used (the meanings of the letters can change). When you use the code, you should state at the beginning of the line that it's the AB/DL Code v1.0. I'm looking for suggestions of any kind, but especially in the areas of:

• Which "fields" to include and not include, and how to encode them. For example, should I include a field for how interested you are in spanking, or bondage? If so, what letter/number/symbol should stand for spanking, how should an interest in spanking be further qualified, and what symbols should be used to express those finer distinctions? Do I already have a field that you think shouldn't be included, or should be expressed differently?
• How much gradation of interest there should be in a field, and how to express it. For example, in the hypothetical spanking field, should it range from ---, --, -, all the way out to +++? Or should there just be a - for those who aren't interested and a + for those who are?
• Better wording for some of the gradations. Other codes have obviously been worked on by talented humorists, or at least those who fancy themselves as such. Clever wordings abound.
• I'd like to put in more than just what kind of kink or fetish interests you have. That's only part of a person. What sorts of interests do many of us have in common to one degree or another? For example, are lots of us into science fiction? Model railroads? Stamp collecting? If there's a lot of interest in something, maybe it should have a field of its own.
• On the other hand, I'd also like to make this separate from the other code schemes. If we exactly duplicate the Geek Code or the Furry Code, what is the point of having an AB/DL code? So if you think we're duplicating another code too closely, let me know.

How It Works

The code is basically a list of what I'm going to call "fields," because they're kind of like database fields and also because they relate to fields of interest or activity. A field is represented by a letter of the alphabet, and for each field you use various characters to indicate your interest or disinterest in this subject or some other set of details about yourself. Instructions for each field are listed below. There are also some general modifiers that can be used to affect any field.

Most fields have to do with an activity (for example, D means diaper-wearing). The easy way to continue is to add pluses or minuses (or nothing) to indicate the degree to which you are interested in that activity (for example, D- means you'd rather not wear diapers, D by itself means you just wear them as part of the outfit, D+ means you wear them for fun, etc.). The general modifiers can be used to make additional statements about your interest in diapers (for example, !D means you refuse to have anything to do with diapers, and D? means you haven't decided how much you like diapers).

Quick Summary of Field Letter Codes

Here are all the code letters. Click on a letter to jump to a more detailed description of it, with examples.

General Modifiers

These are modifiers that can be used with any field.

• ? : Indicates that you haven't decided where you fall in the field, or that you have no opinion one way or another. This replaces the normal suffix. (Example: If you haven't decided to what extent you like baby clothes, you would use C?)
• ~ : Indicates an approximation. You normally fit the given code, but it varies from time to time, or you're not completely sure. Placed between prefix and suffix, or sometimes between parts of the suffix. (Example: k~0 means that you're more or less 50-50 bisexual.)
• / : Indicates that you fit more than one type. This means two or three specific types, perhaps varying depending on your mood, not uncertainty over a wide range of types. Generally speaking, the alternatives are listed in order of preference. Placed between the two suffixes. (Example: Sm/f means you roleplay as either a male or female.)
• ! : Indicates a positive refusal to participate in this field. Unlike ?, which means you haven't made up your mind yet, ! means you have made up your mind that you want nothing to do with this subject, for or against it. Place before the code. (Example: !A means you don't do ageplay.)
• > : Indicates that you currently fit one code, but hope to move to another in the future. Placed between two suffixes. (Example: C->+ means you haven't been into wearing baby clothes so far, but you're hoping to become more bold in the future and maybe wear them to a private party.)
• < : Similar to >, indicates that you currently fit one code, but used to fit another in the past. Placed between two suffixes. (Example: C+<- means you didn't used to like wearing baby clothes much, but you've changed your mind and will now wear them at private parties, costume parties and the like.)
• $ : Indicates that you actually make money in Real Life out of this. It doesn't have to be your primary day job, just a source of significant income. Placed after the suffix. (Example: W+++$ means you've gotten a book with significant AB/DL content published, and you're making money writing. Who's your publisher?)
• # : Indicates that you prefer to keep this information to yourself. This replaces the normal suffix. (Example: s# means "I'm not telling you which sex I am.")
• ( ) : Used for grouping and making things clearer. (Example: I have c(l/m)+++, indicating that the +++ applies to the entire (l/m) symbol. In other words, I use both Linux and Macintosh, and computers are my life.)
• 2 : In the case where you're talking about an activity, this can be used to turn a field character from "I like X done to me" into "I like to do X to other people." In a way, using 2 creates a new field -- by this I mean that you can use both the regular field and the 2-modified one. (Example: D- D2+ means, "I don't like to wear diapers myself, but I enjoy diapering others.") Remember this one by thinking "I like to do this 2 (to) others."

Part 1: Your Baby Or Fetish Side

A -- In-role Age

Some of us like to roleplay that we're a different age than we really are. If you don't roleplay, feel free to leave this out, or use !A. Ages listed are approximate.

• A : Teen, approximately 14-20.
• A- : Preteen, 10-13.
• A-- : Child, 5-9.
• A--- : Toddler, 2-4.
• A---- : Baby, below age 2.
• A* : I roleplay that I'm my own age (is this ageplay?).

Use the 2 modifier if you want to specify the age range you like others to play in scenes. (Example: !A A2---- means "I would never roleplay a different age, myself, but I want the other person to roleplay a baby.") And feel free to use the slash if you're into playing more than one age. (Example: A----/--- means "I like to play either a baby or a toddler, but I prefer the baby role.")

B -- BDSM role

Some of us are also into bondage, domination/submission or sadomasochism. Nothing wrong with that, but if you're not into it leave it out or use !B. If you wish you may indicate the role(s) you enjoy.

• Bb : Bottom (he/she who is done unto by the Top)
• Bd : Dominant (he/she who's in control of the Submissive)
• Bs : Submissive (he/she who's under the control of the Dominant)
• Bt : Top (he/she who does unto the Bottom)

If you do more than one of these, just use slashes. (Example: if you're into being either dominant or submissive but prefer the submissive role, use Bs/d.) Or, if you don't want to "prioritize," just lump them together after the B (Example: Bds).

C -- Baby Clothes

Many ABs/DLs like to dress up!

• C++++ : I've made plans to be buried in baby clothes
• C+++ : I'll wear baby clothes at any opportunity (where costumes are not expected)
• C++ : I'll wear baby clothes at AB conventions, if there ever are any (where costumes are uncommon)
• C+ : I'll wear baby clothes for Halloween or at private AB parties (where costumes are expected)
• C : I might wear baby clothes in private
• C- : I'd wear baby clothes if I had to
• C-- : You must be kidding, I'd die first

Add an m after the C if you've made your own baby clothes. (Example: Cm++ means "I'll wear baby clothes in situations where they're uncommon, and I've made my own.") You can use 2 if you want to specify how much you enjoy putting others into baby clothes. (Example: C- C2+ means "I'm not much into wearing baby clothes myself, but I enjoy putting someone else in baby clothes and taking them to an AB party, costume party, etc.")

D -- Diapers

Here's what it's all about.

• D+++ : I've worn diapers so long I need them!
• D++ : I wear diapers constantly
• D+ : I wear diapers frequently for fun
• D : I wear diapers as part of the outfit
• D- : I'd really rather not
• D-- : I would never ever wear a diaper, and I don't know why I'm reading this!

Note that you can use the 2 modifier to say both how much you like to wear diapers and how much you like to diaper others. (Example: D+ D2++ means "I wear diapers sometimes myself, but I want to keep somebody else in diapers at all times.")

F -- Other fetishes and kinks

OK, so maybe diapers aren't the only thing in the world. If you're into any of these and want to include it, here's how.

• Fd : Domination/Submission
• Fe : Crossdressing/Transvestism
• Ff : Feet
• Fi : Bondage
• Fk : Water Sports/Golden Showers
• Fl : Brown Showers
• Fm : Enemas
• Fn : Catheters
• Fp : Plastic
• Fq : SM/Sadomasochism
• Fr : Rubber
• Fs : Leather

If you're into more than one of these, you have a choice. You can rank them from most favorite to least favorite, using slashes (Example: Fp/l/i), or you can just lump them all together after the F (Example: Filp). You can also use the 2 modifier to state which of these you like done to you and which of these you like to do to others (Example: Fki F2ei means, "I like to receive golden showers and to cross-dress others, but I like both to give and receive bondage").

K -- Who you'll play with

Use this code if you want to tell everybody who you're willing to play with, where diapers and/or baby things are concerned. This is not necessarily the same thing as your sexual orientation; there's another code for that later. Loosely based on the Kinsey scale.

First, list your preference:

• Km : I prefer playing with males
• Kf : I prefer playing with females

Next, add the strength of your preference. (Here, x means either m or f, whichever you chose. Don't actually type Kx++!)

• Kx+++ : It must be the sex I specified, no substitutions accepted.
• Kx++ : I strongly prefer this sex, but I might consider the opposite one.
• Kx+ : It doesn't matter a great deal, but I prefer this sex.
• K0 : It doesn't matter at all.

Example: Kf+++ means you will only consider roleplaying with females. Km+ means you don't care much, but have somewhat of a preference for males.

If you have different preferences for the "caretaker" or "fellow baby" roles, indicate these with a c or b right after the K. (Example: If you want a female caretaker exclusively but don't care whether a fellow baby is male or female, use Kb0 Kcf+++.)

M -- Messing

Uh-oh, smells like somebody needs a change!

• M+++ : I will mess anywhere, anytime
• M++ : I like to mess in my pants -- somebody put me back in diapers!
• M+ : I'm such a stinky baby!
• M : I'll mess in my diapers occasionally, but only if they're disposable and/or easy to clean.
• M- : Maybe, if I'm alone, and I really have to go, and the bathroom door is stuck.
• M-- : I'll hold it until I die! Or pull the door off its hinges.

Feel free to use the 2 modifier to specify how much you would want another person in your scene to mess himself/herself. (Example: M- M2+ means "I'm not into messing myself, but I want to play with somebody who messes his/her diapers.")

O -- Spanking

Many of us are into spanking or being spanked. Here you can specify how much you like it and even throw in some details.

First, put in the details, if you wish.

• Ob : Hairbrush
• Oh : Hand spanking
• Ok : Over-the-knee spanking
• Op : Paddling
• Os : Slipper

Then add how much you like it (or dislike it).

• O+++ : Spank me now!
• O++ : I like spankings whether I'm playing baby or not
• O+ : Baby needs a spanking
• O : Maybe if it made sense in the context of the roleplaying scene
• O- : I dislike being spanked, but it could conceivably happen as part of a scene
• O-- : Never, ever spank me; I hate it, and if you do it I'll never play with you again

Example: Okp+ means you like over-the-knee spankings and paddles, while in a baby role.

This is another good place to use the 2 modifier if you like (or dislike) spanking others. Example: Os+ O2b++ means, "I like to receive spankings with a slipper while in a baby role, but I love spanking my partner with a hairbrush whether they're in a baby role or not."

P -- Plush critters

Lots of us love these!

• P++++ : Where'd my plushie go? Oh, it's buried under my stuffies
• P+++ : I collect every one I find of a certain species (or two, or three...)
• P++ : I've got a collection of several favorites
• P+ : I have been known to cuddle a few
• P : I like them; they sit on my shelves collecting dust
• P- : No thanks; they'd only sit on my shelves collecting dust
• P-- : Kid stuff; I'd sooner hug a pincushion

S -- In-Role Sex

Some infantilists roleplay (for example, as a baby). Use this code, if you wish, to indicate what sex you roleplay as. Feel free to use the # ("mind your own business") or ! ("nothing to do with me") modifiers if you prefer. (You may, of course, use the other general modifiers if, for example, you play different roles at different times.)

First, what sex(es) do you roleplay?

• Sf : Female
• Sh : Hermaphrodite
• Sif : Female, being treated/raised as male
• Sim : Male, being treated/raised as female
• Sm : Male
• Sp : Polymorph (can change sex at will -- hey, it's a fantasy)

Next, how much does sexual activity figure in your roleplay?

• S+++ : I don't care if it's politically incorrect; molest me!
• S++ : I have no problem with diapered sex
• S+ : Maybe some masturbation, or "playing" during diaper changes
• S : There might be sex, or not
• S- : I'd prefer if there were no explicit sexual activity, whether or not the baby/diaper experience is sexual for me
• S-- : My baby/diaper play is absolutely nonsexual in nature

Examples: If you roleplay as a boy and wish absolutely no sex, use Sm--. If you roleplay as an intersexed female and have no problem with sex at all, use Sif++.

T -- Transformation

If some magic or technology made it possible, would you want to become a real baby?

• T++++ : Never mind the fine print, where do I sign?
• T+++ : Definitely! (as long as I get to choose the particulars)
• T++ : Yes, if it's reversible
• T+ : Probably, as long as I wasn't the first guinea pig
• T : I'd have to think about it carefully
• T- : Not personally
• T-- : What a horrible idea!

W -- Wetting

Many ABs and DLs like to wet their diapers (or pants, or bed, or ...)

• W+++ : Dry? What's that word mean?
• W++ : I like to pee in my pants.
• W+ : Wetting in diapers feels good.
• W : Wet or dry, doesn't matter.
• W- : Prefer not to, but then there's "Titanic" ...
• W-- : I would never wet in a diaper or anything else; that's disgusting

Feel free to use the 2 modifier to specify how much you would want another person you were "playing" with to wet himself/herself. (Example: W+++ W2+++ means "I love to wet anytime, and I want the person I play with to also wet anytime.")

Part 2: Real Life

RL -- Occupational area

What do you do for a living?

• RLA : Art
• RLBM : Business/management
• RLC : Craft
• RLCI : Construction industry
• RLCT : Computers/information technology
• RLE : Engineering
• RLET : Education/teaching
• RLF : Farming
• RLFB : Finance/banking
• RLGP : Government/public service
• RLL : Law
• RLLW : Literature/writing
• RLM : Music

A few special cases:

• RLAT : I'm a baby of all trades
• RLU : Undecided (generally used by young students who haven't picked a major yet)
• RL- : No qualifications, no job, no complaints!

Add a * after the code if you're trained or experienced in the field, but haven't managed to persuade anyone to actually pay you to do it yet (this doesn't apply to RLU or RL-). And feel free to use the slash if you're doing more than one of these for a living, or are at least experienced/trained in more than one.

a -- Age

• a++++ : 60+ years
• a+++ : 50-59 years
• a++ : 40-49 years
• a+ : 30-39 years
• a : 20-29 years
• a- : 10-19 years
• a-- : Under 10 years

If you prefer, you can use a number to indicate your exact age rather than using one of the approximate codes. (Example: If you're 30, you could use a+ or a30 -- or a#, of course.)

c -- Computers

Since you're probably reading this on a computer screen, there's a good chance you have some familiarity with the technology. Use this code to tell us how much of a Computer Geek you are.

• c++++ : I'll be first in line to get a cybernetic interface installed in my skull!
• c+++ : Hey, if there was anything else to life, there'd be a newsgroup about it
• c++ : Computers are a large part of my life; I spend time every day in front of one; I've tried my hand at programming
• c+ : Computers are fun; I can use some software without resorting to the manual; I play a mean game of [insert favorite game]
• c : Computers are just a tool; I use one when it serves my purpose
• c- : I'm nervous of anything more complicated than my microwave
• c-- : Where's the "on" switch? Better yet, where's the "off" switch?
• c--- : They're taking over the world! Smash the machines! Up the Luddites!

If your rating is at least c, add one or more of the following letters (just after the c) to indicate your preferred operating environment:

• a : Amiga
• b : BSD Unix
• d : MS-DOS
• l : Linux
• m : Macintosh
• n : Windows 95/98/NT
• o : OS/2
• u : Unix (commercial)
• v : VMS
• w : Windows 3.x

Example: cn++ means, "I use Windows 95, 98, or NT, and computers are a large part of my life."

d -- Need to wear diapers

Are you actually incontinent of bladder and/or bowel?

• d+++ : I have no control at all
• d++ : I have accidents day and night
• d+ : I only have trouble at night
• d : I don't need to wear diapers, sigh
• d- : I'm frustratingly continent

Example: Use d+ to indicate that you have to wear diapers at night for one reason or another.

If you want to be more specific, you can use dm and dw to indicate your level of bowel and bladder continence separately. (Example: dm dw+ means you wet at night, but have no bowel incontinence problems.)

e -- Education

How far have you managed to crawl up the academic ladder?

• e++++ : Doctorate, or the equivalent
• e+++ : Master's degree, or the equivalent
• e++ : Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent
• e+ : Some tertiary education
• e : Finished high school
• e- : Haven't finished high school
• e-- : Haven't started high school
• e* : Learned everything there is to know about life from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and late-night reruns of Star Trek and The Prisoner
• e** : Graduate degree from the School of Hard Knocks

f -- Real-life fetish factor

How far does your infantilism or diaper fetish spill over into your other life? Or, to put it another way, how far do you allow the mundane world to get in the way of the important things in life?

• f++++ : I am not a grown-up, I'm a baby!
• f+++ : I've been known to suck my pacifier, wear diapers openly, etc., in public
• f++ : I've been known to suck my pacifier and/or wear diapers openly among friends
• f+ : I make frequent jokes, show friends my DPF newsletters or other magazines/literature
• f : I make an occasional reference to my AB/DL side
• f- : I only tell close friends
• f-- : I tell nobody

h -- Housing

What sort of home do you live in?

• h++++ : Married ... with children
• h+++ : Married, or shacked up with your SO on a long-term basis
• h++ : Living with one or more fellow AB/DLs
• h+ : Living with one or more people who know nothing about infantilism or diaper fetish
• h : Living alone; other AB/DLs come to visit
• h- : Living alone, get out once a week to buy food, all surfaces covered in computers and/or AB stories/pictures
• h-- : Living in a cave with 47 computers and a T1 line
• h* : I'm still stuck living with my parents
• h** : I'm not sure where I live anymore; my workplace/lab seems like home to me
• h*** : Homeless

i -- Internet

• i+++ : I'm a Webmaster/site administrator
• i++ : I spend most of my spare time surfing the Web, and read any newsgroup that catches my interest
• i+ : I browse the Web regularly, and read a handful of newsgroups/mailing lists
• i : I have a browser and a connection, and even use them occasionally
• i- : Not connected yet
• i-- : The Internet sucks; it's all just a flash in the pan anyway
• i--- : It's a dangerous, subversive, perverted abomination that needs to be banned before people stop voting for me!

Add a * after the i if you have your own home page on the Web; make it *a if your page mentions ABs/DLs.

k -- Sexual orientation

If you want to express your sexual orientation in your code, here's how. If you don't want to, you can leave it out, or use the # general modifier to say k#: "My sexual orientation is none of your business!" Once again, this is loosely based on the Kinsey scale.

First, list your preference:

• km : I'm attracted to males
• kf : I'm attracted to females

Next, add the strength of your preference. (Here, x means either m or f, whichever you chose above.)

• kx+++ : I'm only attracted to x.
• kx++ : Usually I'm only attracted to x, but occasionally I glance at someone from the other sex.
• kx+ : I'm attracted to both sexes, but I have some preference for x.
• k0 : I'm 50-50 bisexual.

Example: kf+++ means you are only attracted to females. km+ means you're mostly bisexual, but have somewhat of a preference for males.

s -- Real-life sex

Use this code, if you wish, to describe your sex (and sex life). As with the in-role sex code, you should feel free to use the # ("mind your own business") or ! ("nothing to do with me") modifiers if you prefer.

First, which sex are you?

• sf : Female
• sh : Hermaphrodite
• sif : Intersexed; female but raised as male
• sim : Intersexed; male but raised as female
• sm : Male

If you are transsexual, feel free to use sf>m (female, transitioning to male in future), sm<f (male, transitioned from female in past), sm>f (male, transitioning to female in future), or sf<m (female, transitioned from male in past). Or just say who you are now.

If you wish to reveal any details of your sex life, add one of these codes:

• s+++ : There's more to life? Where is it, and what equipment do you need?
• s++ : I was once referred to as "easy", but I have no idea where that might have come from
• s+ : I've had real, live sex
• s : I've had sex ... oh, you mean with someone else?
• s- : Not having sex by choice
• s-- : Not having sex because I can't get any
• s--- : Not having sex because I'm a nun/priest
• s* : I'm married, so I can get it whenever I want (well, that's the theory, anyway)
• s** : I have a few little rug rats to prove I've been there (but with kids around, who has time for sex?)

Examples: sm+ means "I'm male, and I'm not a virgin." sf<m++ means "I'm female, but I used to be male, and I'm what you might call sexually active."

w -- Writing

Some of us have written down our fantasies (or other stories), and some have actually been published!

• w++++ or w**** : I've out-sold John Irving
• w+++ or w*** : I've sold a book
• w++ or w** : I've sold a story to a real magazine
• w+ or w* : I've had stuff published by a small, members-only publisher like DPF or ABW
• w : I've written a story that somebody else has read
• w- : I have these scribblings but nobody is ever going to see them!
• w-- : Never written a word of fiction (except on IRS forms)
• w--- : Illiterate

For those who have made sales, use w+, etc. if your stories or books are infantilism/diaper related, w*, etc. if not.

The parentheses mean that the + applies equally to im, f, and m; that is, which of these roles I'm playing doesn't affect how much sexual activity I want.
• T++: I'd love to be turned into a baby, as long as there was a way to turn me back.
• W+: I like to wet in diapers.
• RLCT/S*/LW*/M*: I work in computers/information technology for a living. However, I've got training and/or experience in science, literature/writing, and music, although I'm not doing these for a living.
• a+: I'm 30-39 years old.
• c(l/m)+++: The +++ means I'm really into computers, and the l/m means I like Linux and Macintosh.
• d-: I'm too continent for my own good.
• e+++: Yes, I've got a master's degree.
• f~+: I sometimes talk about infantilism with my friends, but sometimes more and sometimes less.
• h+++: I'm married and living with my wife
• i*a+++: I have a Web page dealing with infantilism (perhaps you've seen it), and I'm in charge of certain Web activities for my employer.
• kf++: I'm mostly attracted to females, but occasionally I've seen attractive guys.
• sm*: I'm male and married
• w+: I've had my writing published by a small, members-only publisher like DPF or ABW. (Both, in my case.)
